Many people have this assumption that all their problems will be solved if they could only move to Europe, England, USA, or Canada. I am not denying that as we do have a better living standard here than the rest of the world.

But, I do want you to know that the Western world is also broken and dark. I personally know a number of broken people and disjointed families who live in London. They have no peace and joy. I have also met homeless and lost people on the streets of London. Our hospitals are also full of people who are battling with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. There are people who are addicted to drugs and there are some who have no jobs. Many younger folk here are addicted to pornography and drugs too. If you go on the streets you may also experience racism and stereotypes.

I hope you get the picture. The West is not your promised land. And if you still want to come to the west then, by all means, please do. Just don’t enter any country illegally. I know many illegal immigrants who have no access to healthcare, education, and work. Some work as laborers with builders or farmers. They are looked down upon. If they don’t find work then they are forced to sleep on the streets in the cold.

So, if you think being rich and comfortable will give you lasting joy then you are mistaken. You will never be satisfied if you place your hope in a good career, marriage, family, technology or a rich country. Only Jesus can satisfy you. He does that by changing and feeding you. He came into this world to be the bread of life so that you may not hunger and thirst any more (John 4:13-14, John 6:35).

As for Christians living in the East, I am not overlooking the fact that Christians are targeted and killed in Pakistan on a daily basis and persecution and poverty is real in India also. I appreciate that these times have been difficult for many Christians but you have remained steadfast. You have believed the word of God when it says that this earth is not our permanent home, we are mere sojourners on earth.

I also know some Christians (especially from India) wanting to move to the West because they desire a better lifestyle. If this is your only motivation to come to the West then you need to stay put. It’s not the will God for you to be self-centered. Jesus calls us to be the light and salt where He places us. If you are living in India, Pakistan or Africa then you are exactly where He desires you to be. Serve your God with all gladness wherever you are. Be content.

“But godliness with contentment is the great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.” – 1 Timothy 6:6-10.
