We always thank God for a sound Biblical teaching at Grace Church Southall. Sunny Kundhi (who is one of the elders at Grace Church) was assigned to preach a Christmas message from Isaiah 9:6. We were greatly encouraged to learn once again that there is no one like our Master. He is unique, loving, kind, gracious, holy, powerful, glorious and humble.

Many people including kings and prophets spoke about the birth, life on earth, death and resurrection from the dead of Jesus Christ hundreds of years before He came into this world. This makes Christ unique and supreme over many others.

Isaiah prophesied about the unique birth of Jesus  more than 600 years before Jesus was born – it a what we call a prophesy, something that was told exactly how the future events will pan out. The writer Isaiah was giving hope to the Jewish nation of a messiah – the one who would come to save them, lead them, care for them and give them victory.

For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. – Isaiah 9:6

And this messiah would come and do and say things that have and never will be done again, He is still the most fascinating figure the world will ever see. However, there are people who doubt and others who make up their own stories to answer this most important question – Who is Jesus?

1) Jesus is fully man.

For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given…

“The Word became flesh.” He was born of a woman – albeit by miraculous means but he came into the world as a baby. He didn’t just appear as a man, like adam – He humbled himself to the point of being born of a woman and would grow up to become a man.

He was a baby, he cried, he needed to be fed and cared for by his earthly father and mother. The bible tells us that He grew. He got tired, thirsty and hungry. He died bodily and arose with a real human body after his resurrection. He had emotions – he felt pain and anguish, he cried, he laughed, and he loved.

  • He made decisions and had a will – He is a man.
  • He was a not any other man, but He was a real man.
  • He was responsible, he cared for people, he was humble and meek, yet fiercely truthful. He stood up for the poor and weak and was not fearful of man.
  • He had friends, family, enemies.

Jesus was real, He became a human being, He is fully man.

2) Jesus is fully King.

When future kings are born, they are born as princes and later became kings. And they reign but they die in the end. But there are never been anyone who is born a king apart from Jesus. The wise men and shepherd bought gifts only worthy of a king to Him at His birth. One of the main things that Kings do is rule and whilst Jesus was here on earth, He established his own kingdom, and His reigns even now.

Jesus held many titles – too many to go through this morning but here are a few:

  • He is the king of the jews – this was affixed to the cross when he died and the jews did not accept him but he did what no other King could do, which was pay for their sins.
  • He is the servant king – His rule was not harsh or tyrannical but it was different – He led by example by washing the disciples feet and saying it’s better to give than to receive.
  • He is the sovereign King – Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
  • He is the king of Kings – Psalm 72: May He judge Your people with righteousness and Your afflicted with justice and let all kings bow down before him, All nations serve Him.

and the government shall be upon his shoulder.

They will come a time when this will be fulfilled in the Millennium, when Jesus Christ will rule the earth as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. But we saw this even in his life, we saw his government – he led not as Politian’s do now but led as a true governor.

Jesus is Fully King, But there is more…

 3) Jesus is fully God.

and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

These names can only be attributed to almighty God:

Jesus was born 2000 years ago but has existing from eternity – he has no beginning and no end as He is the beginning and then end. However 2000 years ago the one who created mankind became a man.

  • He is a Wonderful Counselor

Wonderful – The word wonder is the word pele – which means too wonderful to comprehend.

He is truly wonderful – he is marvelous in all his ways, his is miraculous and full of wonder.

Have you experienced his wonder?

Counselor – He should be our first port of call when we need counsel, only He is fit to provide counsel for our lives.

Jesus can and will help you with your problems – he loves and cares for us. He may use the presence and the words of another Christian to do it, but Jesus is our counselor.

Friends can and do help – one friend may be wise another may be sympathetic, another kind but

When we go to Christ, and we get wisdom; we get love, we get sympathy, we get everything that can possibly be wanted in a Counselor.

Have you experienced his council?

  •  He is Mighty God – He is the God of all creation and glory, the LORD who reigns in heaven, the One worthy of our worship and praise. He is not just Sovereign, He is all knowing, all powerful and all present. He fights for His people – like a true king.

Have you felt the awe and majesty of this mighty God?

  • He is the Everlasting Father

The Literal meaning of everlasting father is Father of Eternity. All His plans and purposes are everlasting and eternal. Now and forever He is a Father, provider, protector, and shepherd of His people.

Have you felt and experiences His fatherly affection and care?

  • He is the Prince of Peace

For He himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility. – Ephesians 2:14

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. – Romans 5:10

He is the One who makes peace, especially between God and man. The greatest problem man has is sin and Jesus came to forgive us of that sin so we could have peace with God. Not only does He give us peace with God, He then gives us peace in our relationships with one another. Cross analogy.

Jesus is fully God.

In closing – if you are a follower of Christ, here are the words of John Calvin:

Whenever it appears to us that everything is in a ruinous condition, let us recall to our remembrance that Christ is called Wonderful, because He has inconceivable methods of assisting us, and because his power is far beyond what we are able to conceive.

When we need counsel, let us remember that He is the Counselor.

When we need strength, let us remember that He is Mighty and Strong.

When new terrors spring up suddenly every instant, and when many deaths threaten us from various quarters, let us rely on that eternity of which He is with good reason called the Father, and by the same comfort let us learn to soothe all temporal distresses.

When we are inwardly tossed by various tempests, and when Satan attempts to disturb our consciences, let us remember that Christ is The Prince of Peace, and that it is easy for him quickly to allay all our uneasy feelings.

This will these titles confirm us more and more in the faith of Christ, and fortify us against Satan and against hell itself.

The one who is fully man, fully King and Fully God He came into the world to save sinners like you and me – come to Him this Christmas.
