We have arranged a series of talks about the existence and the attributes of God at Grace Church Southall this summer. Last Friday, I was presented five arguments for the existence of God. Please see the summary of my talk below.

1. Cosmological Argument

The universe is made out of nothing. In Chemistry, it is impossible to get something out of nothing. Once there was nothing and then there was everything. This problem can only be solved when we look outside of this Universe.

“In the beginning God made heaven and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)

2. Teleological Argument

It talks about the design we see in creation. The universe has a design. A human body has a specific design. Likewise, trees, animals and everything else we see points to a specific design. You cannot have a design without a designer.

“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night-to-night reveals knowledge.” (Psalm 19:1-2)

3. Ontological Argument

It is more of a philosophical argument. if we can perceive in our minds God who is perfect, eternal and holy being then God must exist, otherwise why would we think of something that does not even exist? Perhaps, God has left a desire in us to know Him.

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

4. Anthropological Argument

It refers to morality. If we are made of mere electron, protons and atoms then why do we think? Why do we have emotions? Why do we feel guilty when we do wrong? Isn’t it because God has placed a moral law within us? You cannot have a moral law without a moral lawgiver.

“They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them.” (Romans 2:15)

5. Biblical Argument

The Bible has stood the fiery tests of time ever since it came into existence. It unashamedly tells us that God exists.

The God of the Bible is a personal God who is interested in us. He is an active and hearing God. Here are a few facts of the Bible that cannot be denied.

  • Historical Facts – The Bible is a set of 66 books. In these books we read of people, kings, prophets, places, events, which haven’t been denied once.
  • Prophetical Facts – There are more than 300 prophecies about the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ alone. These prophecies were made hundreds of years before Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
  • Extra Biblical Facts – Non-Christians historians have affirmed the existence of people we see in the Bible including John – the Baptist and Jesus Christ. Therefore, those who say Jesus Christ never existed are simply ignoring the historical and extra biblical facts of the Bible.

In spite of these convincing arguments, the God of the Bible tells us that it is impossible to know Him and please Him without faith.

“Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me.” (Jeremiah 9:23)

If you don’t know this God then we would like you to get to know Him. We will be presenting talks about the attributes of God in Grace Church Southall every Friday night at 7:30pm.
